Kangana Ranaut left small-town Himachal Pradesh as a teenager, defied her family's wish that she become a doctor, and talked her way into Mumbai's film industry with no connections whatsoever. Cast at 19 in the gritty thriller Gangster (2006), she immediately stood out for raw, unfiltered intensity. Over the following decade she became Bollywood's foremost champion of the female-led film, headlining hits such as Queen and Tanu Weds Manu Returns and collecting four National Film Awards along the way.

Never one to avoid a fight, Ranaut has taken on nepotism, the press, and the industry establishment itself, all while expanding into writing, directing, and production. She received the Padma Shri in 2020, and in 2024 she added politics to her portfolio, winning the Mandi Lok Sabha seat. Her directorial passion project Emergency, in which she plays Indira Gandhi, released in 2025.
