Crowned Miss World in 1994, Mangalore-born Aishwarya Rai parlayed global fame into a film career that began, tellingly, not with a Bollywood launch but with Mani Ratnam's Tamil political epic Iruvar (1997). Sanjay Leela Bhansali made her a superstar: Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Devdas (2002) won her Filmfare Best Actress awards, and Devdas's Cannes premiere began her long association with the festival, where she became the first Indian actress to serve on the jury.

Rai's range runs from Tagore adaptation Chokher Bali to the real-life survivor drama Provoked, alongside blockbusters like Dhoom 2, Jodhaa Akbar, Enthiran and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Honoured with the Padma Shri and France's Order of Arts and Letters, she is a UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador and returned to Tamil epic mode with the two Ponniyin Selvan films. She is married to Abhishek Bachchan.
