Arijit Singh - Biography
🎹 Foundations in Murshidabad (1987–2004)
Arijit was born into a multicultural family—a Punjabi Sikh father and a Bengali Hindu mother. Music was in his DNA: his mother, maternal aunt, and grandmother were all trained in classical music.
Early Training: He began training at the age of three under the Hazari brothers.
Disciplines: He mastered Indian Classical music (Rajendra Prasad Hazari), Tabla (Dhirendra Prasad Hazari), and Rabindra Sangeet (Birendra Prasad Hazari).
The Scholarship: At age nine, his talent was recognized by the Indian government with a scholarship for training in vocal classical music.
📺 The Reality Show Spark (2005–2009)
In 2005, at the age of 18, his guru insisted he participate in the reality show Fame Gurukul.
The Setback: He finished 6th, losing out on public votes. However, he caught the eye of filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who recognized his potential early on.
The Winner’s Edge: He later participated in and won another show, 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil.
Freely Freelancing: He used the ₹10 lakh prize money to build his own recording studio in Mumbai. Instead of chasing the spotlight, he chose to work behind the scenes as a music programmer for legends like Pritam, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, and Vishal-Shekhar.
🚀 The Breakthrough & Dominance (2010–2024)
Arijit’s playback career started modestly with "Phir Mohabbat" (Murder 2), but the year 2013 changed Indian music forever.
The Anthem: The release of "Tum Hi Ho" from Aashiqui 2 turned him into an overnight superstar.
Record-Breaking Streak: He became the only artist in history to be the most-streamed Indian artist for 7 years in a row (2019–2025).
Global Titan: By 2024, he surpassed Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran to become the most followed artist globally on Spotify, currently reaching 170 million followers.
🏆 Accolades & Artistry
Arijit’s shelf reflects a rare balance of commercial success and critical acclaim:
National Awards: 2-time winner (for "Binte Dil" and "Kesariya").
Filmfare Records: 8 Best Male Playback Singer awards, a feat that matches his idol, Kishore Kumar.
Civilian Honor: Awarded the Padma Shri in 2025 for his unparalleled contribution to Indian Arts.
🌿 The "Small Artist" Philosophy (2025–Present)
Despite the fame, Arijit remained famously reclusive, often seen in his hometown Jiaganj, riding a scooter or helping local charities.
Independent Growth: He launched Oriyon Music, his own label, to support independent artists and explore non-film music.
The Finale: In early 2026, citing a desire to grow further as a "learner" and focus on his own compositions, he announced his retirement from film playback singing, leaving fans with one final chartbuster: "Gehra Hua" from #Dhurandhar.
