The news of Chatterjee 's demise was shared by Indian Film & TV Directors’ Association president Ashoke Pandit on Twitter. He wrote, "I am extremely grieved to inform you all the demise of Legendary Filmmaker Basu Chatterjee ji . His last rites will be performed today at Santacruz cremation at 2 pm. It’s a great loss to the industry. Will miss you Sir. #RIPBasuChaterjee."
Basu was best known for his films like Chhoti Si Baat, Chitchor, Rajnigandha, Piya Ka Ghar, Khatta Meetha , Chameli Ki Shaadi , Chakravyuha, Baton Baton Mein, among others. Chameli Ki Shaadi was Chatterjee's last commercially successful movie.He also did shows for doordarshan.
Basu Chatterjee was master of middle-of-the-road cinema, his movie always has a role reserved for Mumbai City, blooming romance in BEST Buses to Gateway of India in background. He made middle class his hero.
